Key Experience:

24 years experience managing commercial shrimp farming operations in Ecuador, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam – including both hatchery and grow-out phases.

Research, management and consultancy experience in several Asian, African, South and Central American countries.

Strong background in aquaculture science with research and teaching skills.

Epicore BioNetworks, Inc., U.S.A. Asian Technical Director. Responsible for technical support of sales teams in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India and elsewhere throughout Asia for sales of their aquaculture products.

FAO, Rome. Consultant. Responsible for writing a report on technical guidelines for the management of health and maintenance of biosecurity in tiger shrimp P. monodon hatcheries in India.

2004 Stirling Aquaculture, Stirling University, Scotland, Consultant (Specialist in shrimp farm and hatchery management) on a mission to Madagascar to audit a 250 ha shrimp farm and hatchery and identify and resolve production problems.

FAO, Rome. Consultant. Responsible for editing a report on technical guidelines for the management of health and maintenance of biosecurity in white shrimp P. vannamei hatcheries in Latin America.

STREAM, NACA, Kasetsart University Campus, Bangkok, Thailand. Consultant on an APEC project investigating the potential of aquaculture to provide alternative livelihoods to people involved in destructive fishing practices.

2002-2003
BIM Halong Investment and Development Co., Vietnam. Manager of Shrimp and Grouper Hatchery and Farm Project. Responsible for all of the company’s aquaculture projects including two shrimp and fish hatcheries and maturation facilities, 4,200 t tank-based broodstock farm and 100 ha shrimp farm. Responsible for management of one of the two SPF hatcheries for P. vannamei, P. monodon and P. japonicus and grouper (Epinephelus Spp.) and designing and supervising construction of the other hatchery and maturation facility and the shrimp broodstock tank farm. Also managed the pond-based shrimp and grouper farm, employing a total of 98 people.

1999-2002
Seaquest S.A. Guayaquil, Ecuador, S. America. Manager of Shrimp Domestication Programme. Responsible for a genetic improvement/domestication programme for P. vannamei on behalf of four large Ecuadorian shrimp farming companies. Manager of the entire project including design, construction and management of a shrimp maturation facility (20 million nauplius/day) and larviculture facility (80 million PL/month) employing 95 people. Also managed the farm ongrowing side of the project on the company’s shrimp farms, including stocking, harvesting and transfers of the shrimp. Responsibilities also included administration of the programme and running laboratories for PCR and bioassays on the shrimp produced.

1998-1999
Camaronera Cahusa. Machala, Ecuador, S. America. Shrimp Farm Technical Manager. Responsible for management of a 300 hectare semi-intensive shrimp (P. vannamei) farm with a total of 100 employees. Also involved with consultancy to clients dealing with over 3,000 hectares of local shrimp farms. Also in charge of the research and development arm of the farm, including staff training programmes, the construction of 160 hectares of new ponds, trials with various nutritional, soil and water chemistry products and the development of captive broodstock lines for use in the farm’s hatchery.

1997-1998
Industrias Santa Priscila. Guayaquil, Ecuador, S. America. Hatchery, Broodstock and Nutrition Research Manager. Responsible for the technical management and administration of the company’s 3 shrimp (P. vannamei) hatcheries producing a total of 200 million post-larvae/month, with a staff of 170 people. Also responsible for the development and implementation of a captive broodstock programme with 8 staff. Responsibilities also included the design, implementation and operation of all the company’s nutritional trials, with subsequent modifications to the diets produced in the feed mill.

1996-1997
Epicore Networks (USA) Inc. Mt. Holly, New Jersey, U.S.A. Senior Aquaculture Scientist. Responsible for the management and operation of the company’s aquaculture biotechnology projects worldwide, concentrating on the American continent. In charge of running sales and technical support services to numerous shrimp (P. vannamei) hatchery and farm projects in Ecuador and other South and Central American countries. Responsibilities also included research and development of the company’s aquaculture products and biotechnologies; training and supervision of company aquaculture staff and preparation of seminars, reports and consultancy advice for clients for the company’s worldwide aquaculture business interests.

1995-1996
PT. Environmental Networks Indonesia (S.E. Asian branch of Epicore Networks), Jakarta, Java, Indonesia. Aquaculture Manager. Responsible for the management and operation of the company’s aquaculture projects in Indonesia. This included a dozen intensive shrimp (P. monodon) farms, two large shrimp hatcheries and the design and construction of a new 200 ha intensive shrimp farm in Sulawesi. Responsibilities as for the previous position, but concentrating on S.E. Asia.

1994-1995
Epicore Networks Inc. West Byfleet, Surrey, England, U.K. Research Manager. Responsible for establishing and managing a research project investigating the efficacy of microbial products at removal of nutrients from water. The project was based at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling. Duties also involved scientific consultancy on bacterial bioremediation and aquaculture for a range of Epicore clients worldwide.

1988-1994
Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Stirling, Scotland, U.K. Research Fellow. On ODA-funded shrimp culture research project. Responsible for shrimp (P. monodon) nutrition, water quality and sustainable culture research programme. This included design, construction and management of shrimp hatchery and on-growing culture facilities at both the Institute of Aquaculture and the overseas research base at the Tinsulanonda Songkhla Fisheries College in S. Thailand, the latter for at least 6 months per year. Major responsibilities also included shrimp culture consultancy work, lecturing, supervision and training of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and visiting scientists in shrimp and prawn culture techniques. I was one of the lecturers at the workshop on shrimp health management run by the British Government ODA and Thai Fisheries Department, held in Bangkok, 1993/4.

1989-1990
Baobab Fish Farm, Mombasa, Kenya, East Africa. Consultant. Designing a hatchery for P. monodon and M. rosenbergii and surveying shrimp farming activities in Kenya.

1985-1988
Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Stirling, Scotland, U.K. Research Assistant. On EC-funded prawn culture research project. Responsible for nutrition, larval rearing and husbandry research on freshwater prawns (M. rosenbergii) including lab and field-based trials at Stirling and the collaborating institutes, University Pertanian, Malaysia and the University of Ruhuna in Sri Lanka. Also conducted courses on prawn and shrimp culture techniques for students and visiting scientists at the Institute.

1982-1984
Baobab Fish Farm, Mombasa, Kenya, East Africa. Farm Manager and Researcher. On 50 tonne integrated, intensive tilapia tank unit and hatchery and 30 ha quarry rehabilitation project and nature trail employing 30 people. Also conducted work on freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium spp.) larval rearing and pond ongrowing, tilapia and crocodile nutrition and culture.
